Scottish Power has announced that the Longannet power station, Scotland's last coal-fired power station, is to close at the end of March 2016. 236 jobs are reported to be affected by the decision.
The company has said that it hopes to avoid compulsory redundancies for the staff, a number of whom have been at the site for their entire working lives. However, it is not clear as to what alternatives to compulsory redundancies are being proposed. The site in Fife is one of the largest coal-fired power stations in Europe and has been operational since 1972, but is being closed due to the high costs of connecting to the electricity grid. The closure of the site has led to debate about how Scotland will service its ongoing electricity demand, with focus likely to be on the use of renewables
