Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Italian division of Dutch courier company TNT Global Express has announced 239 redundancies. The company disclosed the decision in the context of a new activity plan, entailing the closure of branches and other restructuring measures to reduce costs. According to the sources, the company did not meet the business targets set for the past three years. The unions organised demonstrations and called for a strike. Unions remarked that the company is still implementing dismissals agreed in the last mobility procedure and complained about the lack of a development strategy.
Update, 05/08/2015: TNT reached an agreement with unions and public authorities on the redundancies. The company will lay off up to 239 workers by means of incentivised voluntary redundancies (out of whom 16 have already accepted incentives and left the company). The agreement also provides for outplacement support and the activation of Wages Guarantee Fund for up to 639 workers, being temporarily suspended from work or having their working time reduced.
