Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
With a view to increase their competitiveness and profits, copper producer KME has decided to cut 340 out of 2,200 staff at its plant in Osnabrück. The job reductions will affect all divisions of the company, including administrative divisions and production. According to the company these redundancies cannot be avoided.
In July and November 2014, KME announced job reductions (see KME 7/2014 and KME 11/2014) which results in a total number of redundancies of 350. Due to the company relocating its pipe production to Menden, however, 40 new jobs will be created at this plant.
KME Germany is a copper producer who belongs to Italian KM Europe Metal which employs around 6,800 people in total.
