Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
American car parts manufacturer Delphi has officially announced the closure of its site based in Périgny near La Rochelle by December 2016. As a result of the closure, 102 jobs (out of 350) will be cut this year and the remaining jobs will be lost by the end of 2016.
The company has been at risk of closure since last September. The staff went on strike following the announcement of closure of the site which manufactures components for diesel engines. Production activities will be outsourced to China, India and Romania, where production costs are much lower. This decision was not driven by the company's economic situation but rather the need to increase profits from 6 to 15%, and meet shareholders' expectations.
