Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Supermarket chain Sainsbury's is reported to be in the process of cutting 240 jobs from its IT department. The jobs which support stores, depots and supply chains are reported to be being outsourced to Tata Consultancy Services. It is understood that most of the staff will be redeployed to the new company, but they are expected to lose out on the terms and conditions associated with being Sainsbury's employees, such as store discount and membership of the company pension scheme. The transfers are expected to happen in the coming two months. There is a dispute over when staff were informed of the company's intentions. Sainsbury's have said that staff were told in January, whereas media are reporting that workers claim the company only informed staff in April.
