Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Belfast-based, Ageas Retail, has announced plans to close its call centre located on the Springvale Business Park. 200 jobs are understood to be affected by the decision. The company provides call centre services for insurance firms. The decision to close the site is due to changing customer behaviour making the site uneconomical, according to the company. The news is a shock to workers who reportedly had little idea about the company's plans before the announcement. A statutory 90 day consultation period is now underway and politicians and government agencies will meet with management as part of this process to investigate alternative solutions to closure.
