Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Scottish oil, company Burntisland Fabrications, has announced that 170 of its 260 full time jobs are at risk of redundancy across three of its yards. A formal 90 day consultation has started on the affected jobs. The affected yards are Burntisland, Methil and Isle of Lewis. In early 2014 the company employed 2,500 staff most of whom were agency workers, but the current number now stands at 709. The decision to enter the consultation period comes as a number of contracts are coming to a close, and there is little further work on order.
