Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Eastman Chemical Company, a chemical manufacturer based in Workington, Cumbria, is reported to have begun a formal consultation into the possible closure of the business. The move means that 152 jobs are affected. The company has stressed that the decision is not a reflection on the performance of staff, rather that there is low demand for the products made by the company and that operating costs for the site are high. The GMB union has called for the company to seek alternatives to a total closure.
It was confirmed in March 2015 via the company website that the site would cease production in April 2015, and that the site would be closed during the third quarter of the year.
