Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
German automotive supplier Mahle has indicated it will cut 370 jobs in Germany over the next four years as part of a plan to reduce personnel costs by 15%.
The job reduction will affect several sites. Only two have been named so far. In Rottweil, between 200 and 300 out of 1,000 jobs will be cut. In Gaildorf, 100 out of 350 jobs will be made redundant. On the other hand, Mahle will create 130 jobs in Leibertingen so that the net job reduction of 500 is reduced to 370.
According to management, tough competition with sites in Eastern Europe and several other regions is the main reason for the reduction.
Mahle is the fourth biggest automotive supplier in Germany, employing 66,000 people worldwide, around 14,000 of them in Germany.
There have been several restructurings at Mahle in the past ten years (see Mahle-2005, Mahle 2009 and Mahle 2010).
