Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
UK supplier of solid fuels and bulk material logistics, Hargreaves Services will close Monckton Coke and Chemical Company Limited. The coke making plant is located in South Yorkshire. Closure of the Monckton plant is the result of finalisation of a Group Simplification Plan which will result in the loss of around 120 jobs. A mandatory 45-day formal consultation process about the future of the plant began on 27 October 2014. At the conclusion of the consultation period, the company has announced that production will cease and the plant will close in December 2014. In a statement to investors, the company has stated that it remains committed to exploring alternative employment opportunities for staff, both within the Hargreaves Group and externally. The company, head-quartered in County Durham, has told investors that the closure is due to falling forward prices for coal and low consumer demand.
