Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Job losses have been announced at United Biscuits' McVities factory in Glasgow. 202 jobs are under threat, though 36 new posts will be created, resulting in a net loss of 166 jobs. The company statement attributed the job cuts to the need to ensure a more efficient and competitive workplace. The company's proposals are now being considered by local government, employees and their representatives. It is not yet known when the redundancies will take effect, though the GMB union has critcised the timing of the announcement, with it coming in the lead up to Christmas.
