Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Car producer Opel is to create 400 jobs at its plant in Eisenach in 2015. CEO Thomas Neumann announced to reintroduce a third shift in the shift work schedule which will require additional work force.
In Eisenach, where currently 1,600 people work, Opel produces its car models Adam and Corsa. Corsa is the most important car model for Opel and constitutes a quarter of sales quantity.
Opel has had lots of problems in the past years due to decreasing sales and high losses. This lead to several restructurings, starting with the dismissal of around 9,000 people in several EU countries in 2010, a further reduction of 3,400 jobs in 2011 and several measures in 2012 and 2013 (see FS 08/2012, FS 10/2012, and FS 08/2013). The company’s plant in Bochum is going to be shut down by the end of 2015 (see FS 10/2014).
