European Restructuring Monitor (ERM)
The restructuring events database contains factsheets with data on large-scale restructuring events reported in the principal national media and company websites in each EU Member State. This database was created in 2002.
Caterpillar, German producer of ship engines, announced to cut 232 out of 1,100 jobs in Kiel. This is the result of long negotiations between management, works council and trade union IG Metall. Caterpillar will relocate motor production from Kiel to Rostock and China.
The job reduction shall be implemented in a socially acceptable manner and without operational dismissals. Solutions such as partial retirement or voluntary redundancy have been found for 126 employees. The remaining 106 will be offered to change to a transfer agency.
According to IG Metall, Caterpillar has focused too much on mass production and lost sight of developing new motors.
