Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
High Street retailer Wilko has announced that up to 170 jobs could be lost at its head office. This represents about one quarter of the site's workforce. Consultation has been launched. This is expected to conclude by April with redundancies anticipated. The consultation is known to affect a number of departments and cut across all salary levels at the Worksop-based head office.
The company, which was previously known as Wilkinson until its rebranding in April 2014 has suffered two years of declining sales and stagnant profits. Competition from other discount retailers is thought to be behind Wilko's recent poorer performance. The company operates 375 UK stores and also trades via its website.
