Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The 140 staff of MWL Apparatebau in Grimma were given notice on 27 October 2014. According to Dutch Hertel, the German subsidiary no longer fits into the company’s portfolio and additionally suffered from a decline in international demand.
MWL produces thermotechnical appliances and pressure containers for the chemical industry. The staff was surprised by the sudden closure of the site in Grimma. Now trade union IG Metall and the city council are trying to find an investor who is interested in buying MWL and maintaining at least some of the jobs.
