Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Norfolk-based Heinz food factory has announced that it is to close with the loss of 200 jobs. The North Walsham site which manufactures frozen potato products for the 'Aunt Bessie's' range will close when Heinz's licence to produce this range of products expires in April 2015.
The closure is subject to a 45 day consultation process, though the company is reported to have made the closure announcement only after considering a range of options and possibilities to keep the factory open.
Updated, 19-12-2014: At the end of the the 45 day consultation process, the company announced that as no buyer was found the factory would close in April 2015. Negotiation with staff will continue during the month of January to agree on the final plans for closure.
