Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Cambridgeshire based manufacturer Xaar has announced that it is to reduce its workforce by up to 160. The company manufactures digital inkjet printheads; one of their main applications is in the ceramics industry. The announced job losses comes after a fall in demand for its products, particularly in China, and follows profit warnings issued earlier in 2014.
The company has a UK workforce of 800, 700 of whom are based in the factory in Huntingdon. 120 jobs are expected to be lost from the Huntingdon site. The timeframe for the job losses is not yet known.
