Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Italian ice cream manufacturing firm Sammontana is to cut 60 jobs at its site in Empoli. The company, one of the major players in the area of industrial ice cream and frozen pastry, employs about 1,200 employees in 4 production sites and has reported losses in the last 3 financial statements. According to the source, the crisis is due to the persistent negative sectoral trends, worsened by a cool summer that has already impacted on the demand of seasonal workers. Lay-offs should start by the beginning of January 2015 and will affect blue-collar and white-collar workers. The company has also required the activation of 13 weeks of Wages Guarantee Fund on rotation for a maximum of 220 employees. Trade unions wait to discuss about redundancies and wish that solutions will be found to reduce the impact and the number of dismissals and guarantee the sustainability of production.
