Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The wholesale group Makro (part of the German Metro group) confirmed earlier union announcements that up to 340 jobs will be cut before the end of 2014. Makro currently employs 4100 employees in 17 establishments. The plan is to cut 15-20 jobs in each establishment. Unions have criticized the measures, especially that a large group of current employees will have to apply for a job to remain in service (the so-called musical chair method). The wholesale chain is coping with the difficult economic circumstances, and aims to make the organization more efficient through this restructuring.
