Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Food service company ESS Support Services will dismiss 100 chefs and cleaning personell currently working on offshore installations in Norwegian waters. The reductions are a reaction to the declining level of activity on the Norwegian continental shelf. This has contributed to the closing of two floatels staffed by ESS, within the end of the year.
100 out of 900 permanent employees will be dismissed, and the company is also temporarily suspending all use of temporary employment. Union representative Oddleiv Tønnesen says the cuts, which he sees as a result of cutbacks in Statoil, are hitting employees hard and that many are heavily affected.
Several companies in the Norwegian petroleum services industry are also restructuring. According to Teknisk Ukeblad, the total number of job reductions in the industry is 3524, per September 25. DNB estimates the figure to be 4300 jobs.
