Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Food and beverage producer Toro is restructuring its factory in Arna in Bergen, reducing the staff by 40-60 employees. Most of the workers are unionised, and the union is now working to limit the number of dismissals. The types of job reduction measures are still to be determined. The factory employs a high number of unskilled workers in all age groups, and the union has expressed concerns that many could face difficulties in finding new employment. The restructuring is undertaken to cut costs and improve competitiveness. The company's CEO was cited stating that the factory is running a profit and selling more sauces and soups than in a long time, but needs to cut costs to secure its future competitiveness.
