Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Polish airport management company Przedsiębiorstwo Państwowe ‘Porty Lotnicze’ (‘Polish Airports’ State Enterprise) announced that it will cut 500 jobs. According to the sources, the collective dismissal programme is part of a larger restructuring plan. The sources report that the restructuring programme will improve the financial and organisational effectiveness of the company. Trade unions had initially planned strike action but they have now agreed a deal with the company.
The sources report the value of the restructuring programme is estimated to exceed PLN 250million, but Porty Lotnicze expects that it will reduce its annual costs by PLN 100 million. Additionally, the sources report that an additional 300 jobs are expected to be cut throughout the second stage of restructuring programme by the end of 2014.
