Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The German engineering firm Bosch will lower the workforce of its plant in Tienen, Belgium, by 410 by 2020 (280 white collar workers, 130 blue collar workers). The factory, which currently employs 1,060 people, makes wind-screen wiper parts. Bosch explained the move by saying that it is suffering from competition and pricing pressure. As a result conventional windscreen wiper production in the Belgian factory is no longer viable. Bosch said it will invest more in the production of the new generation of windscreen wipers in Tienen though.
