Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The office furniture company Steelcase announced plans to close its factory in Wisches (Alsace) which employs 230 workers and about 70 temporary workers. The activities will be transfered to three sites in Madrid (Spain), in Stribro (Czech Republic) and in Sarrebourg (France) that will be the last manufacturing plant in France.
There is currently no information on the closing schedule however the main production line is expected to close by the end of the year. In 2010, Steelcase has closed a plant in Alsace (202 employees) with a transfer of employees to the site of Wisches.
As announced the closure is linked with the decrease of demand in Europe. According to the compamy HR manager, Steelcase uses only 45% of the capacities of its sites in Wisches and Madrid.
