Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sapa, a producer of aluminum extrusions, announced that it will cut 136 jobs when it closes its plant in Priverno. According to the sources, the management said that the closure is due to significant economic losses; however the trade unions believe that the group is planning to concentrate its activities in other Italian plants.
The sources note that negotiations are currently underway between the company, trade unions and local government officials. These negotiations will last for 75 days. According to the sources, many workers are unhappy with the trade unions for not taking action against the job losses sooner. Some workers have declared their intention to appoint a delegate to participate in the consultations with the company.
