Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
In April 2014, the UK cigarette manufacturing multinational, Imperial Tobacco Group (35,000 employees world-wide) announced 900 job cuts with the closure of cigarette factories in Nottingham (UK) and Carquefou near Nantes (France). The reorganization plan will reduce the workforce by 900. Employee representatives have been informed and consultation processes are underway. "A comprehensive range of measures to support employees will be discussed as part of the consultations", explained the company management. The aim is to "secure the sustainable future of the business" by saving £300 million a year from September 2018. About 540 jobs will be lost in Nottingham and 360 in Carquefou.
