On 28 January 2014 shrimp processor Heiploeg was declared bankrupt. However, the activities will be taken over by Parlevliet en van der Plas, the main competitor of Heiploeg. The takeover will result in the loss of 90 jobs, while 300 jobs will be saved. Parlevliet will also acquire the foreign activities of Heiploeg, where some 3,000 are employed.
Heiploeg got into financial trouble after financing takeovers with money from the banks. The firm has also been fined by the European Commission for making illegal pricing arrangements with a group of competitors.
