Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sofedit-Gestamp, specialized in hot stamping for car manufacturers, is to cut 163 positions. Reportedly, the cuts will be made in the plants at Theil-sur-Huisne (Orne) (122 job cuts), Sermaises (Loiret) (29) and Saint-Romain (Seine-Maritime) (12).
The union CFDT announced that the management will try to reduce the number of forced dismissals via voluntary departures. Some early retirement measures will be proposed to employees by March. The first redundancy letters are expected to be sent by the 6 May.
In late 2013, the plant at Thell-sur-Huisne had received financial support from the department of Orne (EUR 112,000) to invest in a new production line. The company has also an investment plan (about EUR 60 million) for 2012 to 2014. However, unions are still worried and fear new job cuts.
Sofedit-Gestamp has previously cut 190 positions in 2013 (see ERM factsheet).
