Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Defense and aerospace company Airbus Defense & Space is to cut 2211 jobs in Germany. This is to affect the sites in Manching (1010 job cuts), Friedrichshafen (332 job cuts), Ulm (315), Unterschleißheim (249), Bremen (174) and Ottobrunn (131).
The plan was announced by the company’s works council after consultations with the management. Previous plans had envisaged the cutting of up to 2600 positions in the country.
Airbus Defense & Space is part of the Airbus group that emerged from EADS in late 2013. At that time, Airbus had also announced that the merger of its subsidiaries Cassidian, Astriam and Airbus Military into Airbus Defense & Space would result in large job cuts in various European countries.
Updated, 21/05/2014: As reported, Airbus plans to cut up to 2,500 jobs in Germany by the end of 2016 but the company has agreed to avoid forced redundancies until January 2017. As announced the restructuring will take place by means of early retirement and internal transfers.
