Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
UPM plans to shut down its paper factory of Docelles (Vosges), making all 161 staff redundant by February 2014.
This follows the announcement of the plant’s closure in January 2013 and the search for potential buyers. The search remained unsuccessful as UPM refused a recent offer that allegedly would not have guaranteed the production to be maintained.
UPM is based in Finland. Earlier this year, the group had finalised the sale of its mill in Stracel to a joint-venture, which led to the take-over of 130 staff and the dismissal of 120 others.
