Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Office furniture manufacturer Steelcase is to close its site in Durlangen (Baden-Wurttemberg) and make all 265 staff redundant. Production is to be relocated incrementally to Ostrov u Stribra, Czech Republic.
Relocation is to start in spring 2014 and shall be completed within a year.
According to the management, the offshoring is part of a cost-reduction strategy in a highly competitive market.
The company announced to engage in negotiations with trade unions to make redundancies socially acceptable.
Steelcase group is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and employs about 10,000 staff worldwide. Steelcase runs another site in Rosenheim (Bavaria), which is not to be affected by the restructuring.
