Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Delphi, manufacturer of automobile components, is to apply for a redundancy procedure (ERE) with the consequent loss of 171 jobs in Sant Cugat del Valles (Barcelona). This amounts to a reduction of 24% of its entire workforce.
The company is to apply for the ERE on November 28th. Dismissed workers are asked to leave the company in December 2013.
The company blames the measures on a severe drop in sales (12pc in 2013).
Unions oppose the measure, asking for alternative plans avoiding direct dismissals. The management is to meet unions on October 28th which is to clarify details of the dismissals.
The company is part of the US-based Delphi group. In 2012 the company had applied for a temporary redundancy procedure that lasted 20 days.
