Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Croatian shipyard Brodotrogir is to cut 350 jobs. As announced, the redundant workers will receive severance pay of HRK 5,950 (EUR 800) per year of service. The shipyard will keep 830 workers.
The European Commission has demanded that Croatia reduces part of its shipbuilding capacities, so Brodotrogir has to reduce a part of its employees. The negotiation process between management and trade unions took more than a year.
The shipyard is expected to continue operating normally. The trade unions attempted to negotiate adequate redundancies, so the minimum severance pay will be about HRK 50,000 (EUR 6,660), and the highest around HRK 234,000 (EUR 31,200).
The job reduction measure refers mostly to auxiliary workers and administrative staff, crane operators and maintenance workers, while most of the production workers will keep their jobs.
Brodotrogir previously employed 1,200 employees, of which 500 were auxiliary workers and administrative staff. The complete duration of the restructuring is expected to last up to five years and will include further education, retraining and requalification of about 290 employees out of 830 remaining in Brodotrogir.
