Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The Austrian manufacturer of office furniture Bene has announced 100 job cuts at its headquarters in Waidhofen an der Ybbs (lower Austria). This is part of a world-wide restructuring programme; altogether, 150 jobs are to be shed globally. The group, which has encountered financial trouble, has already taken a variety of measures, including restructuring itself (see Bene 2013).
Negotiations with banks are currently taking place. Turnover will be dramatically lower than last year. About half of the jobs to be shed are in the production (45) sector, the rest (55) is in the administration, back office and sales support sector.
