Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 18 June the Dutch reseller of the consumer electronics company Apple declared bankruptcy. Around 400 jobs are lost after the closure of 34 shops in the Netherlands. As announced the closure is due to a drop in sales and possibly the unsustainable expansion plan of the company (high number of shops in expensive areas with high rents).
According to the sources, on June 20, a rival company BAS group, expressed interest into acquiring some of the retail locations. Specifically it announced the reopening of 25 of 34 shops that were closed after the bankrupty of iCentre. 300 out of the initial 400 jobs will be saved.
