Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The distribution centre of the Austrian trading company Adeg is to be closed down in October 2013, thus making all 100 employees redundant.
The company was bought by the German supermarket chain Rewe in 2008. According to a Rewe spokesperson, the utilisation levels of the distribution centre in Spittal an der Drau in Carinthia have been low lately. Its capacities will be incorporated into the company's central warehouse. Good solutions for the employees are to be found; however, this is still an ongoing process.
The Carinthian branch of the Chamber of Commerce (AK) has strongly criticised the move. Neither the AK, nor the Public Employment Service (AMS) have been informed of the step beforehand.
