Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has announced redundancies of up to 172 of its approximately 500 employees in Finland. The company has concluded negotiations with employee representatives on the cuts.
TCS offers software consultancy services and has about 276,000 employees worldwide, about 500 of them in Finland. The company states that it wants to improve efficiency and harmonise its practices. TCS started negotiations with employee representatives in March 2013 on an initial plan of up to 290 redundancies and the possibility of redeployment for some of the affected employees within TCS's new organisation.
TCS's announcement drew sharp criticism from union representatives, since mobile phone maker Nokia outsourced over 700 positions from its ICT services to TCS and HCL in March. Unions have accused Nokia of outsourcing the job cuts to other companies. A walkout took place in March to protest the cuts.
