Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The German company Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) announced that it is to shed 200 to 300 jobs in its production site in Vienna by mid-2013.The company, a joint venture for military vehicles was founded in 2010 by Rheinmetall AG and MAN AG. It currently employs 1,479 people in various sites globally. About 756 workers are employed at the plant in Vienna-Liesing.
As reported in the media, the workforce cannot be used anymore to its full capacity due to the lack of new orders and the reduced production. Thus, about a third of the staff members are to be made redundant until mid 2013. Since the beginning of the year, the employees were already on short-time work. Negotiations between management and the works council on a social plan have commenced.
UPDATE 13-11-2013:
The timeline of the dismissals has been extended until the end of 2013. Furthermore, only 200 to 210 employees are to be made redundant in total. 170 dismissals have already been made or are decided upon. The remaining 30 to 40 cuts are still to be negotiated as to date.
