Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Medical equipment manufacturer Baxter Malta is to dismiss 97 of its 600 employees by the end of 2013. There are also plans to relocate its production lines to Tunisia due to lower costs.
Baxter announced that during 2012 it had incurred losses of €2 million and projected that it would incur further losses unless it resorts to restructuring. Therefore the company aims to terminate the jobs of 83 production staff and 14 other managerial jobs.
Baxter Malta is a subsidiary of Baxter International Inc. which in 2012 recorded sales of $14.2 billion and operates in more than 100 countries. The firm employs some 50,800 workers worldwide.
