Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Stora Enso, a Finnish-Swedish pulp and paper manufacturer, is to let go of 300 employees due to the decline in the newspaper industry. The reductions are distributed on 175 jobs in Kvarnsheden, 100 jobs in Hyltebruk and another 25 jobs in Nymölla, Ala and Gruvön.
The reductions are part of a larger restructuring plan, which will see a total of 600 people go from different units within the group. Earlier employment adjustments by Stora Enso in Sweden are covered in factsheet 19847, 19364, 14367, 19021 and 10320.
Stora Enso also owns saw mills at different locations in Sweden. According to a representative from the company, there may be further reductions within that sector.
The company claims to ensure that they will work in cooperation with the local society to help affected employees find new employment. Vacancies at other Stora Enso units will be made available.
As of February 2013, there is no information about when the employment adjustments will start taking effect or when they will be implemented by.
