Description

Tyre manufacturer Goodyear has announced the closure of its plant of Amiens Nord, which employs 1,173 employees. The plant produces tyres for agriculture engines and cars.

According to the management the group Goodyear has done everything possible to save the plant in the last five years, but closure was the only solution. The company had made 61 million euro losses at the plant in 2011.

The union continues to stage industrial action against the proposed cuts. The closure marks the end of five years of industrial conflict. Last year, Goodyear proposed to sell one part of the site to the US company Titan International, which had agreed to take over some of the activities and 537 employees. But the CGT trade union never accepted this offer and Titan withdrew it.

The management has started the information and consultation process. It will hold a Central Works Council on the 12 February. According to newspaper reports the closure may be difficult to manage politically, as the Ministry of Industrial Recovery (redressement productif)  told employees it will try “to avoid the worst”.

Updated, 28/06/2013 On 20 June, the Court of Nanterre rejected the request from the CGT to suspend the job saving plan. The plant is set to close.
