Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
On 25 January 2013, the video game retailer Game announced 400 job cuts. The Commercial Court of Bobigny agreed on 1st February three partial take-over offers, but only 71 shops and 156 employees will be taken over out of a total of 157 shops and 557 employees.
Micromania, Game's main competitor, will take over 44 shops and 88 employees. Game Cash, retailer of second hand video games, 24 shops and 65 employees. Illiad will buy 3 shops and take over 3 employees. All 401 employees will be dismissed.
The group Game had gone into administration in UK, wtih the loss of 2,104 jobs in the UK and Ireland, as a result of the closure of 277 stores (see ERM Factsheet). The company has been facing fierce competition from online retailers.
