Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The company Levi Strauss & Co is planning 55 job cuts across various departments in Belgium. The restructuring plan was drawn up two months ago and it is ongoing. The collective dismissals procedure (Renault law) was allegedly launched without prior warning to the employees or their representatives.
According to the management, the decision arises from the need to remain competitive by reducing the costs. The unions have expressed their wish for no further dismissals in the near future as they fear that the Ixelles seat will lose its headquarter status for the European operations. They have expressed their decision to negotiate a social plan for the redundant employees and to propose alternatives.
