Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Tieto Sweden, IT services provider, is to let go of 110 employees in Umeå, Skellefteå, Luleå and Karlstad due to weaker market demand. The reductions are distributed on 65 jobs in Karlstad, 34 in Umeå and Skellefteå and 10 in Luleå. Jobs will be lost in a wide range of positions, but mainly in software development.
Tieto Sweden is a subsidiary of the Finnish Tieto Oy, a major player in IT services in Northern Europe. In March 2012, Tieto announced a global restructuring plan, affecting 300 jobs in Sweden and 1,300 jobs globally. The case is covered here.
Negotiations are presently taking place and the reductions will be implemented in the beginning of 2013.
