Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
At its production site in Steyr, the German car manufacturer BMW is to shed 100 temporary agency workers, but will employ an additional 135 regular workers over the course of 2013.
The cut in temporary agency workers, which was announced in December 2012, is due to a decrease in engine production to below one million pieces in 2013, the lowest output within the last four years. The chairman of the company's works council was reported to hope that this reduction in the workforce is only of temporary nature. In 2011, some 130 temporary workers were taken over as regular staff members and another 40 in the last quarter of 2012.
UPDATE 30.01.2013:
In January 2013, BMW surprisingly announced to hire an additional 135 permanent workers. Even though a slight decrease in turnover is expected for 2013 (after a 5.2% decrease in 2012), this step is due to an investment in research and development activities, as well as in new equipment and production lines in Steyr. For this, 135 additional workers will be needed.
