Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Pilkington, world glass maker for buildings and vehicles, is to close its plant in Porto Marghera, in the province of Venice, with the consequent loss of 173 jobs. According to the company, the closure - that will go ahead at the beginning of 2013 - is attributed to the negative consequences of the economic crisis on the European market and a decline in demand in the automotive sector.
The trade unions reacted to the company’s decision by going on strike and requesting the involvement of national and local authorities in order to plan new industrial investments in the ‘chemical pole’ of Porto Marghera.
