Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Sony DADC Austria, part of the Sony group, is to dismiss a further 155 employees at its production sites in Anif and Thalgau near Salzburg. This step is due to continued decline in the market for physical media (DVDs, CDs) and concerns 120 permanent employees, as well as 35 temporary agency workers. This is the second wave of redundancies in 2012, when in January, the dismissal of 158 employees (76 permanent employees and 82 temporary agency workers) was announced (see here).
Social plans are to be negotiated for the concerned employees. The dismissals are part of a larger, world wide restructuring programme which was announced by Sony in April 2012 (see here). Initially, it was announced that this programme would not have any effect on the employees at the Salzburg province based production sites.
