Hargreaves Services has announced the closure of Maltby Colliery, a deep coal pit near Rotherham. 540 people have been issued with redundancy notices.
The company has announced that the site has both safety problems and coal can no longer be extracted in a financially viable manner.
The consultation with the union and staff continues and will end on the 30th of November. Concerns about the safety of the site are shared by politicians, staff and management and it is hoped that an alternative to closure can be found.
