Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
Steiff, the German multinational teddy bear manufacturer, will close its factory in Portugal, located in the municipality of Oleiros. This closure will lead to a collective dismissal of all 103 workers, almost all of them women.
According to statements from the mayor José Marques, there aren't many jobs in the area and these women are left with no alternative to unemployment. He stressed that the premises that house the factory are available free of charge by the city council, the factory has many orders and stable finances. He also added that the factory is sustainable and he expects the German chancellor to criticize the company’s move during her visit to Portugal the following week.
The company will focus on the manufacturing of teddy bears in its factories in Tunisia and Germany.
