Ethics in the digital workplace
Digitisation and automation technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), can affect working conditions in a variety of ways and their use in the workplace raises a host of new ethical concerns.
The French company Alcatel-Lucent announced its intention to cut 290 jobs in Belgium.
The job cuts will be made within the framework of a worldwide restructuring plan announced on 26 July, with its intention to cut 5000 jobs (6.6% of its workforce). On 18.10.2012 this number was updated to 5490 staff reductions worldwide (see here). Since the merger with Lucent, the company has cut around 20,000 jobs, as they aim to reduce their costs by 12,5 million euro by the end of 2013 .
This move is reported to come as a surprise, as 185 job cuts were announced in January (see here) and in the summer the Belgian unions were promised that there would not be any further staff reductions this year.
